Fissure Sealants

You are here: Professional Care /Sealants

It is difficult for the big bristles of the toothbrush to get in between the small cracks and grooves on young teeth. If left alone, these tiny areas can develop tooth decay. Sealants bring teeth extra protection against tooth decay and help prevent cavities.

Sealants are commonly applied to children's healthy teeth with the purpose of preventing tooth decay, especially as permanent teeth begin to erupt. However, adults can also receive sealants on healthy teeth. Adult teeth rather than baby teeth are the common candidates for fissure sealants, but there are instances when a child may benefit from sealing baby teeth. Adults may also benefit from dental sealants in some situations.

A dental sealant only provides protection when it is intact. Therefore, sealants that come off or break need replacement. The average life span of fissure sealants is about 5 years, although they some last long into adult life, continuing to provide protection for the patient's teeth.

sealant application

Dental sealants are a plastic resin bonded to the deep grooves on the tooth's surface. The procedure seals the tiny grooves to become smooth, glazed out by the sealant, and are less likely to harbor plaque. This makes brushing the teeth become easier enhancing effective prevention of tooth decay.
