Why Straighten Your Teeth?

Perfectly aligned teeth are an important quality in a beautiful, attractive smile. Straight teeth are important for your overall dental health as well. Crooked, overlapped, and misaligned teeth contribute to a few dental health problems, including:

Tooth Decay:
Misaligned teeth are more prone to tooth decay. Overlapping of teeth closes the spaces between teeth, making it difficult to keep them clean. As plaque and bacteria build up in hard to clean areas, tooth decay can occur.

Gum Disease:
Since misaligned teeth are difficult to clean, they are at much higher risk for gum disease. As with tooth decay, bacteria cause gum disease. When disease-causing bacteria begin to proliferate at and below the gum line, it creates an ideal environment for periodontal disease that eventually causes tooth loss.

Disproportionate Dental Wear:
Teeth are designed to fit together perfectly. Each tooth is designed to perform a unique function; biting, chewing, or tearing. When teeth do not fit together properly, there is tendency to compensate for the malocclusion by biting with teeth meant for chewing teeth, or chewing with teeth designed for biting, as an example. This compensation causes disproportionate wear and tear of teeth, and increases the occurrence of tooth damage, fracture, or loss.

Headaches and Migraines:
One of the symptoms often associated with misaligned teeth, or malocclusion is frequent headaches or even migraines. When your teeth do not fit together properly, it causes increased stress in the head, facial and neck muscles. Strained and overworked muscles cause severe headaches and migraine headaches. Bite correction and tooth alignment of your teeth help eliminate headache symptoms associated with malocclusion.
